Virtually everyone in my family has a great relationship with their television set. I, on the other hand, only watch two shows: Criminal Minds and Game of Thrones.
Falling Behind
I love them so much, in fact, that I am two seasons behind on both. What can I say? I’m terrible at staring at a television screen for very long, no matter how much I love the characters and the great twists and turns in a well-thought-out plot.
Nevertheless, I’m just as excited about this Game of Thrones season finale as everyone else. I’ve been reading the books, in spite of my rebellion against the TV.
And now, I can finally spend the next few weeks trying to binge-watch my way back to updated status, without waiting with bated breath for the next episode to come out each week.
My best friend has already promised to disown me if I do not, and as our relationship has endured roughly 15 years of tough love, it’s one I intend to keep.
Dogwood Festival
But earlier this year, long before Game of Thrones had people glued to their television screen to watch the plot thicken, boil, bubble, and unfold, Michael and I attended the Dogwood Festival at Piedmont Park. In fact, we went the very day we got back from our trip to Sweetwater Creek State Park.
There were many beautiful paintings and sculptures on display by brilliant artists who must have spent decades honing their craft. They sat patiently while crowds of people traversed the walkways, examining their wares and commenting on how remarkable everything looked.
The Broke Life
Quite a few pieces caught my eye, but as I later remarked:
Apparently, we’re much too poor to be sophisticated.
The cost of the artwork was in the hundreds, with a few select pieces ranging in the thousands. There was, however, one particular artist that really captured my attention and almost my money. It was a sculptor, who had made amazing items of dragons clawing their way out of eggs.
I had never seen anything like it and the price was reasonable and well worth it, too. Unfortunately, with all the money I was still setting aside for immigration fees at the time, it wasn’t a luxury I could afford to splurge on just yet.

And surely, I can’t be the only one who thinks Jon Snow is not Ned Stark’s son…

Those dragon eggs ARE amazing! The worth of an object is always in the eye of its beholder, which makes the price of anything rather subjective. Glad you got to see some of the crafts, though.

Hi! I love Criminal Minds too. But I haven’t watched a single episode of Game of Thrones nor read the books. I feel like I’m missing out.
Oh you should definitely try it out if you’re into fantasy. If you enjoyed Lord of the Rings, you’ll love this. It’s basically just a very adult and oversexed version lol. I plan to write a post one day about how George Martin ripped off Tolkien’s work
I’m getting closer and closer to actually starting to watch/read it. But once I find sth I like (show, music, books), I get sucked in and I guess I’m trying to avoid that 🙂

It’s really sad how unaffordable art has become – it’s truly the hobby of the obscenely wealthy. I guess the rest of us will have to make do with exhibitions and museums!

Yes, art has definitely become way too expensive. Funny, considering the stereotype of the starving artist. None of these people were in any way famous. Just super talented.
Yes, it’s so sad! He had great chemistry with the team and i think it won’t be the same without him next season (there will be a next season, right?) Yeah, it’s a pity she only stayed for one season! I like Aisha Tyler too, but I think I still like the Prentiss seasons the best.
I suspect if you don’t have the right connections as an artist it would still be a struggle to get by! But for super rich people fine art has become a form of investment – i guess gold bars get boring after a while, haha – so that’s driving prices up, for the artists it seems to be a question of getting a foot in the door.
Yeah I’m curious to see how Garcia especially takes it. I don’t see that going over very well with her.
Yes, that role Jennifer had does change often. I’m not sure which one I preferred most. Maybe that Hispanic one they had from the much earlier episodes. I don’t remember her name now. She shot the suspect when they couldn’t catch him by regular means.
Yes, fine art is a sign of sophistication for the rich. That’s true. I just wrote an article about that for a client yesterday. But do the artists also have to make it unaffordable to average people? Lol. Makes no sense. Do they want their stuff sold or not?
Yeah, I know the one you mean! I liked her too, she was really tough. Actually all the girls on that show are super tough in their own way, even Garcia – which is maybe partly why i like it so much! I’m guessing it’s about branding for the artists – like how you can never find Chanel stuff at places like Woodbury. Pure speculation though, i don’t actually know any artists haha
That’s true. I guess Criminal Minds is its own lesson in feminism. The prettiest, tiniest blonde is one of the toughest.
And I love how Shemar Moore is always thrown the race card. Like when criminals think they sent him specifically so they can ‘bond’.
I think it really forces us to re-examine stereotypes.
I’m an artist myself, so I’ll just enjoy my own art form haha.
Or when the criminals are bigots and try to taunt or annoy him! I wonder how (and if) they’re going to replace him 🙁
What kind of art do you do? My sister’s quite artistic – dabbles a bit in pottery, painting and everything but I think Etsy is as far as she’ll go (if ever).
Well writing is an art in and of itself, and I get paid to do that. I’ve also done photomanipulation in the past, but haven’t worked on any of those lately. Click the deviantart option under my contact me tab and it will take you right to my old artwork. I also used to draw but lost interest in that after my entire collection was stolen.
Oh wow! Love your old artwork! How did your collection of drawings get stolen?? That’s terrible 🙁 I’m always a bit envious of people who can draw because I can’t, at all, haha.
Well I had it all in one scrapbook and several people offered to buy it. I kept saying no. Then one day I just couldn’t find it.
That was the only point in my life where I could draw. I’m not sure where the inspiration came from. Afterwards, I could never draw again.

I absolutely LOVE the Dragon eggs. They are incredible. I really need to get to Piedmont park more often. The last time I was there was 54 years ago! My dad had no idea what a special trip to Piedmont park it would turn out to be. He almost named me Piedmont. Thank goodness he came to his senses! I’m sorry. You really didn’t ask for all that. My feelings will not be hurt if you delete this post.

I’m glad you enjoyed the eggs. I was sure someone would. Unfortunately, he was out of business cards so no idea how I’ll eventually get one of those. But I really do want one.
And yes, you should totally visit Piedmont more often. It’s a great park. The Beltine is also pretty amazing.
I wonder if we could use the Google image thingy and maybe some info might come up about the artist. It’s worth a shot. If I find any contact info I will certainly let you know.

That’s a good idea. You could try using Google Images. There might also be some proprietary information written on the eggs, near the pricing. I’ll have to check my things too to see if I had written anything down anywhere.
