Soaking Up the Sun at Anastasia State Park Beach

If you’ve been suffering through the winter — especially those of us on the US east coast — then you’ve likely been harbouring a few fantasies of escaping to the tropics. You’re not alone. Lucky for me, I did manage to soak up some sun on the beach, before winter hit us full force in Atlanta.

As an island-girl, there really is nothing as soothing as the sound of waves crashing against the shore. I suppose Winston was thinking roundabout the same thing, as he was fast asleep in 30 seconds.

But there was no way I was going to pass up the opportunity to savour the beach life, if even just for an hour or two. Sleep could wait. And unfortunately, it would have to wait for him, as well.

My friends often joke that I never sleep. But closer to the truth is that I don’t let other people sleep in peace. Vice or superpower? 🤔 Who knows really knows? — but it took me about ten minutes of annoying the hell out of Winston before he finally got the idea.

The Seashells

Whenever I visit a beach for the first time, I always leave with at least one rock, and then several seashells. I have so many now that I’ve forgotten which ones came from Jamaica, and which ones are from America. To further complicate matters, Winston and I collected so many that we’re still trying to divide the spoils.

The Sand Dunes

I didn’t do much exploring of the sand dunes, but I did manage to get a few shots of them, and the boardwalk that weaved through the sandy hills. I might have tried to climb them had Winston not told me ruining the sand dunes brought jail time. I stayed clear of them, after that! 😅

The Swimming

For all the sunshine and clear blue skies, the water was way too cold for swimming, but I went in for a quick dip, anyway. It was even colder than San Diego, which was surprising. I didn’t think anything could beat the cold of the Pacific blues.

It was books and music after that, but alas, it would not last. Sooner or later, we had to leave the ocean behind and head back to Amelia Island. It wasn’t the last I would see of the beach in Florida, though — not with Blackrock Beach and several others, a stone’s throw away.

Though I visited Florida way too late to include Blackrock Beach on my list of best 2017 hikes, it was without a doubt one of the best “trails” I had the pleasure of getting lost on. It’s also the only hiking trail I’ve ever blogged about that will take three posts to detail. More on that next week!

Did you manage to escape any of the winter cold this year? We had snow twice in Atlanta, which is probably a record. I’m pretty glad I have some warm December days to reminisce on, while I wait for the spring.
